Greetings to family and friends!

Our adventure this year takes us to Galveston, Tx for the month of January and Natchez, Ms for the month of February.  Our trip to Galveston was as uneventful as we had hoped it would be.  We were near Galveston in time to watch the Badgers lose to South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl.

Our home away from home

The condominium we're staying at is small but HGTV stylish.  It's been recently remodeled and has some nice features (granite counters and stainless steel appliances).  The gulf is across the road (Seawall Boulevard) from us.  There's a wide beach and a seawall paved walking path which should give us ample opportunity to exercise.

We've begun exploring the Galveston area.  This area was once a thriving sea port and a very wealthy place in the later 1800's.  They had a bit of a set back in 1900 when about 6,000 people were killed by a hurricane in what many consider to be one of the worst natural disasters in this country's history.  A historic district survived and the city serves today as a port for cruise ships.

The kitchen in the bishop's palace was like something out of Downton Abbey.
More homes in the historic district

In 2008 Hurricane Ike hit Galveston killing tens of thousands of trees.  Galveston Island Tree Conservancy funded chain saw carving artists to do sculptures from what remained of some of the trees.  The dog and frog sculptures below are two of the many examples of this artwork available in the historic neighborhood.
